start the day in happiness.

"Why I Wake Early"
by Mary Oliver

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and the crotchety --

best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light --
good morning, good morning, good morning.

Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.

(I first copied this poem into my journal on Thursday, March 18th, 2010. At that time, I was waking up early ever morning to go to class and I lived on the third floor of my building. Luckily for me, there was a big window on each of the stair landings. On many days, as I pushed open the hallway door to head downstairs, I was greeted by golden rays of sunshine, making everything glow. It felt magical and I'd end up bouncing down the stairs in happiness, in kindness.)

P.S. Can you tell I was going through my journals last night?

  1. I seem to remember copying this into MY journal as well. After a good friend shared it with me.
